Bali Behind the Mask: New Years Festivities and Traditional Masks on the Island of the Deities

This trip package was designed for those who enjoy traditional festivities, and are especially interested in Balinese culture and its masks. It includes the Balinese New Years, Hari Raya Nyepi, when the entire island undergoes ritual purification. Besides visiting the home/workshops of Bali’s most
esteemed mask carvers and classes in mask dance and mask carving, participants will see performance of the most important dance and dramas the island has to offer. Dance and carving classes will be conducted by Cokorda Raka Tisnu, Vice-Chairman of the Dance and Music Academy in Bali, and one of the few carvers chosen to create sacred Barong and Durga Masks. It also includes two traditional massages for which Bali is well-known, and a visit to a traditional healer, as well as numerous seminars on Balinese culture. Tour organizer/local guide is Made Surya, a Balinese mask dancer and carver who lives half the year in the USA.
