Masks are connected with the sacred, and are meant to be worn in a transforming ritual that affects both the mask-bearer and the audience.

Mask Makers web into meditation
Hello dear visitors - we are sorry that we haven't had the time to maintain this wonderful site as much as we wanted for a long time.
We have been very busy and will be for yet another long time - so the site will enter into a meditation until further notice.
We will only deal with issues when we have the time.
But don't worry - the site will stay online.

Sally Brookes has made masks for the past twenty five years and her work includes commissions for the Royal Shakespeare Company, Royal Court Theatre and Harvey Goldsmith Productions, as well as private collections. Her mask making workshops have included a master class for the London International Workshop Festival, The Scottish and London Mask and Puppet Centres, The British Association of Drama Therapists, and European Workshop Productions, France. For many years Sally also created the masks for Geese Theatre, a company which uses mask as a central metaphor in its work with offenders.
About the workshop
While there are many ways of making masks, this three day workshop is designed to lead you through one of the most enduring and traditional methods; the process of making a papier mache mask.
The aim is for you to leave with a durable ‘working’ mask, and to provide you with the confidence and know how to create more.
We will start with thinking about the design and different functions of masks. You will then be invited to create your own design in clay, cast it in plaster, and use papier mache to complete the making part of the process. Day three will concentrate on finishing and painting techniques.
All materials will be provided and no previous experience in mask making or sculpting is necessary.
Please note you will be asked to take your plaster mould away with you after the first weekend in order to complete the papier mache process at home during the week.
Dates: 19th, 20th and 26th September 2009
Times: 10.00 am – 5.00 pm
Venue: Queensbridge School, Moseley, Birmingham
Cost: £150.00 for the 3 days
