Oskar Schlemmer and the Bauhaus Stage. The man and the mask. Film
Description: See it here. Oskar Schlemmer did not confine his activities at the Bauhaus to painting and teaching sculpture. He also wanted to put his ideas about ballet into practice, and in 1922 he did so in public for the first time. He planned to free the stage from the trappings of tradition in order to give expression to the `pure idea.' The central theme of his work was the relation between humankind and space, and the mediator between these two was to be the dancer, stripped of his individual identity by the use of costumes and masks. This documentary film, made with the artistic advice of Oskar Schlemmer's widow, presents an historically faithful, precise reconstruction of some of his dances. More than any other film, it gives a sense of what Bauhaus teaching was really like, and is truly important to an understanding of the origins of contemporary dance.

Film Rental at Harvard.Carving The Kanaga mask . Africa
Description: 19 minutes, Color. Produced by The Film Study Center Photographed by Eliot Elisofon. Edited by Robert Gardner and Thomas Blakely The Kanaga mask is used in deeply sacred rituals by the Dogon people of Mali. Carving this mask is as important a ritual as the ceremonies in which the mask is used. The carver, a blacksmith, finds the proper tree and, in a secret cave outside the village, he shapes the mask with gestures which repeat the movement of the dancers who will wear it. When a dancer wears the Kanaga mask he becomes the Creator symbolically. He touches the ground with his mask and directs the soul to Heaven. Although these dances are now frequently performed for the public, the meaning of Kanaga is retained by the Dogon who fear, respect and depend on the the power of the mask. The magnificent seven - Stormwind Productions
Description: Iroquois Pueblo Navajo Kwakiutl Although traditional Native American groups where masking still survives have suffered great devastation in the spread of European culture, many still preserve some of the significance masks once possessed: that is, the power to literally transform the wearer into the being it represents. Masks possessing great power--usually those depicting powerful spirit beings-- were objects of awe, treated with great care and caution. The most powerful were routinely fed with grain, tobacco, smoke--whatever the masks were believed to crave. Lack of such attentions could lead to serious consequences.
