Loretta's Craft / Papermache and woven masks
Description: Hanging from a wall in my grade seven art teacher's classroom, was a mask woven with Jute. As soon I saw it, I had to learn how to make it. After a little coaxing, Mr. Stumm agreed to show me how to weave my first mask. And so began my love affair with masks. For the past 10 years, I have been experimenting with and producing both woven and papier mach? masks.

C. Jagdish / India  Popular
Description: Jagdish is an avant garde sculptor who has created a new genre called ' paper sculpture'. He is regarded as the world's only practicing paper sculptor. His unique cylindrical life size paper figures in a burst of brilliant colours in groups or individually are arresting, grand and yet most simple. His subjects are the people, animals, situations of small towns in rural India. What is characteristic of Jagdish's sculpture is the perceptive wit which makes every work of his a reflection of his sharp social consciousness rather than the mere decorative. The papier-mache masks are made of pieces of paper mixed with paste or glue and then moulded while still damp. Large or small human and animal mask heads so produced are painted as usual with acrylic colours.
