Jacob Simeonoff / Alutiiq from Kodiak Island in Alaska
Description: I am a master carver and I teach the traditional functional art of my people. I teach my people, as well as others, how to make masks, bentwood hats, traditonal clothing, skin sewing, and weapon making. I also like to teach about the cultural significance of each piece, design elements, color schemes, and how to put design elements together so they kind of have a flowing meaning or tell a story.

Shawn Karpes'
Description: "Shawn Karpes' training began in 1982 with George Hunt Jr., Jim Gilbert and Victor Newman during a Native art program sponsored by three levels of Victoria public schools. It was here that Shawn began experimenting in three-dimensional form. In this program, Shawn concentrated on basic design, painting and wood carving. Shawn's mother, Elizabeth Karpes (nee Alfred) was working at Arts of the Raven Gallery at this time and introduced Shawn to many carvers. As Shawn had been raised in Whitehorse and lived there until 1997, the world of Northwest Coast carving was a new experience to him although one to which he was connected by birth"............more

SHAMAN'S QUEST - the masks of NED BEAR
Description: "In the path of life, we often times are met with difficult decisions. These decisions may create varied tangents, that sometime determine, or not, the outcome of our long-sought dreams. There seems to be no real indication where all this will eventually lead, in our days as actual physical beings, although our spiritual entity is one that holds an infinite trail. The physical roles we take part in are only vessels upon which we travel and fate is a consciousness, a wind that moves us, and no one person really knows for sure in what direction it blows. "

I have been carving on my own since. "I also learned how to decorate my works with brass and beads, making them unique.
