Jaime Zapata Espinoza. Peru
Description: NOVICA ARTIST Jaime Zapata Espinoza, born in Lima in 1953, is dedicated to a very interesting craft-- creating masks inspired by his profound Peruvian roots. Made with loving patience, each mask is unique and can express every feeling in the human heart, from happiness to deep sorrow. "I'm an architect, but since I was young I've dedicated a part of my time to the handcrafting of masks. The objective of my work is to transmit human emotions in seemingly animated objects. I use recycled paper and textiles, cans, and some vegetal elements like rushes. Colors are given with natural oxides and earths. For decorating my pieces I also use hand-woven elements with Inca motifs. Each mask is cast with milled paper, dried and finished by hand in elaborating the particular characteristics of a human face in a specific expression. Each piece is unique, and some of them have an aged appearance achieved with a layer of patina. Some masks have rushes and tresses made of fiber ropes. The final step is a layer of lacquer for protecting the pigments.

Ismael Diaz. Mexico
Description: NOVICA ARTIST "Hello, I am Ismael Diaz. I was born in Mexico City and when I was very young we came to live in Tonala. At seven years of age I began to work with a man who made serving dishes, and there I emptied the kaolin for the sets. From there I went to work in a ceramic dish factory where they taught me to mold and paint. When I got married, I began to work ceramics with my wife on the ranch, and now one of our children has begun to help us. In my family, we are all dedicated to handicrafts; my father worked with clay and he taught me much more than I learned in the jobs that I had. "First I collect the clay nearby and I begin to knead it. I place it in molds that I made from plaster and allow it to dry for two or three days. At that point I fire the piece and later paint it, executing an oxidized finish with paints for cement and several earthen baths to achieve that rugged finish. We need about one week to finish a lot of thirty masks.

Marcos Quintanilha. Brazil. Bamboo masks
Description: NOVICA ARTIST "I came into contact with bamboo and its varied techniques thanks to my teacher, Ripper, when I was studying Industrial Design at Rio de Janeiro's Pontifнcia Universidade Catуlica. Bamboo is an ideal material, all its fibers are longitudinal which enables the hand-crafting of resistant pieces. Whereas wood takes up to 60 years before it can be used, bamboo grows in six years and from every stalked removed, two more sprout. Its is an abundant prime material, renewable, that does not promote floor erosion. "

Loretta`s Craft
Description: Hanging from a wall in my grade seven art teacher's classroom, was a mask woven with Jute. As soon I saw it, I had to learn how to make it. After a little coaxing, Mr. Stumm agreed to show me how to weave my first mask. And so began my love affair with masks. For the past 10 years, I have been experimenting with and producing both woven and papier mach? masks. What started out as a hobby, has now become the focus of my life. However, like many crafters, I need a day job to sustain my existence. This means I can't spend as much time as I'd like experimenting and perfecting my craft. However, if I am able to share what I have accomplished with people who love masks, I will be a satisfied artist.

DONNA BURTON
Description: HAND MOLDED, ORIGINAL CERAMIC MASKS - Accented with paint, beads, feathers and jewels "My art is personal and inspired from my spiritual connections with nature and the universe. Many designs, colors and patterns have evolved from my worldwide travels. The diversity of my work is motivated by an inner drive for perpetual change and exploration of distinct artistic mediums. Confronting these challenges takes me to a higher level in my creative and mental process, expanding my personal growth. Once my feelings become apparent, they are transferred onto paper, canvas or clay and reflect my profound spiritual connection. I am grateful"

Salomon Ruiz Goin. Peru
Description: NOVICA ARTIST "I was born in 1946 in Ancash, Peru. I am a self-taught artist, dedicating myself to ceramics and craftmaking since my youth. I specialize in masks influenced by the Vicus, Mochica, and Nazca cultures. I focus largely on the mix of form and color, and despite a lack of formal training I have created a unique, personal style. I try to always remember my roots, while also learning from my readings and travels. Everyday I hope to improve myself, and achieve a style that is both gratifying for me and for those who are interested in my work. Now that I know my art will reach many people, I will dedicate all my efforts and emotion into creating pieces which will resonate in the hearts and minds of my future following. Thank you."
