Link profile: Oceanic Masks from New GuineaCategory: Start / Galleries - exhibitions - shops
Michael Hamson Oceanic Art/Material Culture is a private gallery dealing in museum quality art primarily from New Guinea. With a Masters degree in African and Oceanic Art History and years of field experience in the most remote areas of New Guinea I buy and sell older, authentic art that has passed the test of time within the culture that produced and used the piece. From Utilitarian objects such as bowls, plates and drums to the more ceremonial and ritually used items as figures and masks I search for both the unusual and the classic--but always for the beautiful. It is when the local and Western aesthetic notions of quality, utility, clarity, power and elegance meet that one separates the art from the artifact. And it is these works of art that you will find within these pages.
