Itinerant folk entertainers played an important role in traditional Korean society. They performed a variety of entertainments: puppetry, tumbling, mask dance and drama, and music. Their performances not only provided diversion from the monotony of rural life, they also served to bring communities together and release pent-up tensions, which derived from Korea's rigid social structure.
