The indigenous people of the Pacific Northwest have created a sophisticated and complex art.
It is a highly graphic art, composed of a several simple elements that, when brought together under the influence and guidance of ancient myths and legends, produce dramatic cultural images, striking in their boldness and power.
The term "Northwest Coast Indian" includes the Coast Salish, Nootka, Kwagiutl, Tsimshian, Haida and Tlingit peoples. Originally hunters and gatherers, they lived off of the resources of the river, sea and forest. A custom unique to this culture was the totem pole.
