What is so surprising with masks is that we can find it almost everywhere in time and space and we still can find it in use inside many human groups and not only among primitives civilisations (by example in Japan or Indonesia). Masks are not only a very important event then, but appear to be among the main facts that build such cultures. There, we ever see that masks have surnatural or special magical powers, and the spirit wich it refers is also supposed to live inside it. In many tradtionnal societies a real devotion is paid towards such masks and ceremonies are given to welcome the spirit when it comes inside or to care about when it sleeps. |

But, what can make masks be so attractive and so fascinating to us ? Why do we realy feel into a so close touch with it when we see it ? Maybe masks are among the only pieces of art that are "alive ". If we consider at first mask as a representation even so synthetic and so symbolic sometimes, it is also done to be carried on by dancers or actors. It is also done to be inhabited and animated. And, eventhough it is over a wall or on a piedestal, it is still there vibrating. Much more than any other kind of arts or crafts, mask is talking, it make sound even it is silent.
The target of mask is to catch the invisible, is to make be there what is so fleeting, what is so fugitive.
