Mask Improvisation for Actor Training & Performance: The Compelling Image

Category : MASKS - IN GENERAL
Author : Sears A. Eldredge
ISBN : 0810113651
|

|
Description : The book begins by giving an overview of the cultural and social uses of masks and many of the beliefs surrounding the "transformative" qualities attributed to masks. It goes on to discuss the use of mask in a historical framework and traces the theatrical uses of masks through some significant eras.
The real value of this book comes in the wide range of activities and exercises in the use of mask. Any teacher of Drama (from high school to university) can work with students through the exercises. They begin with the notion of "Neutral" and what the might mean for an actor in terms of movement and characterisation; then works through a range of increasingly defined masks to a complete "Complex Character" mask

Masks (World Crafts)
Category : MASKS - IN GENERAL
Author : Meryl Doney
ISBN : 0531158705
|

|
Description : Using a simple design, these series entries fulfill the dual purpose stated on the covers: to help readers "discover other cultures" and "make beautiful things." Each begins with a short explanation of the history of the featured craft plus a list of materials. Every project is presented clearly on a two-page spread along with information; a map of the country of origin; a fine, full-color photograph of the original artifact; and step-by-step illustrations that explain how to make a similar item. Bright colors and an uncluttered format make the books inviting and create a sense of enthusiasm for what are, in many instances, complicated activities. Masks offers an interesting variety of cultures and complexity, from the relatively simple Andean mask to the Yoruba ancestor mask, complete with figures perched atop it. Many of the Puppets require sewing, working with papier-mache, or making joints, but despite the challenges, youngsters can experience impressive results. For those looking for crafts requiring an investment of time, but that promise exciting results, these titles will fit the bill nicely.
