Michael Hamson Oceanic Art/Material Culture is a private gallery dealing in museum quality art primarily from New Guinea. With a Masters degree in African and Oceanic Art History and years of field experience in the most remote areas of New Guinea I buy and sell older, authentic art that has passed the test of time within the culture that produced and used the piece. From Utilitarian objects such as bowls, plates and drums to the more ceremonial and ritually used items as figures and masks I search for both the unusual and the classic--but always for the beautiful. It is when the local and Western aesthetic notions of quality, utility, clarity, power and elegance meet that one separates the art from the artifact. And it is these works of art that you will find within these pages.

It was a great success. Over 7000 paying visitors saw the exhibition and a great many schoolchildren saw it free of charge. We haven't worked out quite how many children, at peak times over 260 were visiting the exhibition in a single day. The exhibition was followed on April 22nd 2000 by a parade of giants including several of the giants on display. At least another 1000 people saw the parade despite rain and wind which obliged us to reduce the duration of the parade and the number of giants taking part. Two brand new giants paraded with us, Joe from Hardyes School and Eli from Portland.

Following a long established stage tradition, film actors would often sit for "lifecasts" or Life Masks, where their faces or whole heads would be covered in plaster, creating an exact negative image that could be used to make positive castings, or Life Masks. It was these Life Masks that "stood in" for the actors in the make up development.

A selection of Mexican Masks from the collection of El Museo del Barrio, New York, has been specially chosen to accompany the Iturbide exhibition. Mexico has an unbroken tradition of mask-making reaching back more than three thousand years, when masks were used in pre-Columbian ritual, and survives today in villages of Mexico where dance is an important part of every festival. This exhibition marks the first collaborative venture between The Parrish and El Museo, which was founded in 1969 by a group of Puerto Rican educators, artists and community activists who envisioned an educational institution that would reflect the richness of their culture. El Museo is the only museum in New York city dedicated to Latin American and Latino art, and retains its strong community roots as a place of cultural pride and self-discovery.

Originally created for ceremonial dances, masks were often fierce and dramatic, evoking images of creatures who passed between the natural and spirit worlds. Although these masks may never see the inside of a native long-house, or be 'danced' in ceremonies, they honour the ancient times.
