Originally created for ceremonial dances, masks were often fierce and dramatic, evoking images of creatures who passed between the natural and spirit worlds. Although these masks may never see the inside of a native long-house, or be 'danced' in ceremonies, they honour the ancient times.

Masks were common throughout pre-Hispanic cultures but of particular importance to the Mexican and Aztec civilizations. They were used during religious ceremonies and today continue to be used during festivals. With a mask over their face the wearer could become someone or something else. The selection of masks Tumi has are made from clay in workshops in Mexico, following traditional pre-Hispanic techniques. They are predominantly replicas of Aztec pieces.
