San Francisco Mask Italia is proud to feature Venetian and Italian mask designs from over fifty artisans from Venice, Verona, and Florence. We travel to Venice six times every year to bring the latest mask designs and techniques to the American market. All masks are handmade and each one is individually selected for our collection for its quality and beauty. The masks can be used for home d?cor, wall hangings, sculpture, and of course for wearing. The Italian and Venetian mask company grew out of a modest personal collection that we developed for fun after visiting Venice. We started importing the masks for our fine jewelry stores in Hawaii in 1999, and soon began selling wholesale at trade shows around the country. In July 2001, we opened our first retail location in San Francisco. The artisans who make the masks today are continuing a cultural tradition that is over one thousand years old. When you make a purchase for your collection, you are helping to preserve this tradition for coming generations.

" Many years ago, in a city made of magic and light, a great masked ball was held. Gods and kings, heros and mystical creatures were all invited to the masquerade and on the appointed night they made their way to a grand ballroom bathed in the glow of a million fireflies. Their costumes were spun of spider's silk and mist and colored with the lights of the northern sky. On their faces they wore enchanted masks made by the elves of the sacred mountains. They danced to the music of the trees and the songs of the wind and all was happy until they learned that one very important inhabitant of the land had been overlooked."

The masks you will see here are a reflection of the beautiful and compelling art form that has been passed down from generation to generation. Each of these pieces are unique and original, not mass-produced "products". They are molded, poured, painted, and fired by native artists of a city that sees people wearing masks every day- New Orleans.

by Claude Rilly PARIS - If sculpture is the projection of one's thoughts into three dimensions, then the African continent has produced many of the greatest sculptors of all time, even though no single name has ever been passed down. With the permanent exhibition, which occupies three floors of the (too) little known Mus?e Dapper in Paris, we are shown not only the most riveting examples of African art, but also the most disconcerting. Disconcerting because our western minds, despite a century of contemporary art which has been concerned with decompartmentalizing and reconstructing esthetic ideals, always thirst for classifications and categories which are not possible in this context.

BASKET YAM masks (left) and WOODEN YAM masks (right) are found in the Abelam villages above the Sepik River in Papua New Guinea. Men weave or carve these masks, then paint them with clay pigments or natural dyes, for decorating the largest yams at harvest ceremonies. During ceremonial displays, colorful feathers, flowers, leaves and shell money are added for beauty and power. A man's status is judged by how long he can grow these ceremonial yams, which can reach 9-12 feet

The Huichol Indians express their beliefs and deep religious feeling through their art. To the Huichols, religion is not a part of life, it is life. Their art is a direct extension of their religion and it is made not from the standpoint of decoration, but to give profound expression to concepts of spiritual beliefs. Traditional Huichol art, whether it be meticulous beadwork, yarn paintings, masks, votive bowls and arrows or striking embroidered and woven personal adornments, are beautiful not only from the aesthetic standpoint but from the psychological as well. The art consists of many symbols, which tell the story of each piece.

lots of Nice masks and good information here. also: "Oni, which we believe is a unique phenomenon that is embedded in deep and unknown levels of the human mind, plays a relevant role in our lives at times of transition. The widespread recognition of the Oni phenomena is often associated with turning points in history, and seems to reflect meaningful phases in an otherwise chaotic life."

Noh performances reflect upon the daily life and times of the Japanese. An extremely stylized art form which dates back to the feudal period, the masks used convey the mood and character of the part played by the performer. Thus, each mask is a manifestation of elegant simplicity and rustic tranquility.
