I have designed and created masks, headdresses, headpieces and fancy veils for Halloween costumes, Mardi Gras, Venetian Carnival and Masquerade, for themed parties, themed weddings, theatrical productions, and just for fun. My work is crafted from various materials: stiffened fabric meant to conform to the contours of your face for a unique fit; papi?r m?ch?, and an interesting metal-look material. Each mask is meticulously hand-crafted.

"Each of my masks is hand made with great attention to detail and construction, making them as comfortable to wear as they are enjoyable to look at. They are formed over a wire rimmed, vinyl base that stays slightly fexible around the edges, alowing them to fit a wide variety of face shapes. They are then decorated with feathers, fabric and floral leaves. Eyes, noses and beaks are made of a light-wieght, air drying modelling material, then sealed with paper-mache, acryilcs and polyurethane."

NOVICA ARTIST "I was born in 1946 in Ancash, Peru. I am a self-taught artist, dedicating myself to ceramics and craftmaking since my youth. I specialize in masks influenced by the Vicus, Mochica, and Nazca cultures. I focus largely on the mix of form and color, and despite a lack of formal training I have created a unique, personal style. I try to always remember my roots, while also learning from my readings and travels. Everyday I hope to improve myself, and achieve a style that is both gratifying for me and for those who are interested in my work. Now that I know my art will reach many people, I will dedicate all my efforts and emotion into creating pieces which will resonate in the hearts and minds of my future following. Thank you."

NOVICA ARTIST "Once I have the piece in front of me I begin to imagine what I will carve and how I will carve it ..." ?Hello, my name is Rutilio Pascual and I was born on October 6, 1958, in Ocumicho, Michoacan. Since I was a child, I worked in agriculture, a very enduring labor with little or no profit. When we got married, my wife Tomasa began elaborating ceramic figurines to help me with our household expenses. She always told me that I should also work with ceramics, but I continued in agriculture until she convinced me to switch over. It was nine years ago that my cousins taught me how to make wooden masks, and now I?m continuing the trade on my own.

Hanging from a wall in my grade seven art teacher's classroom, was a mask woven with Jute. As soon I saw it, I had to learn how to make it. After a little coaxing, Mr. Stumm agreed to show me how to weave my first mask. And so began my love affair with masks. For the past 10 years, I have been experimenting with and producing both woven and papier mach? masks. What started out as a hobby, has now become the focus of my life. However, like many crafters, I need a day job to sustain my existence. This means I can't spend as much time as I'd like experimenting and perfecting my craft. However, if I am able to share what I have accomplished with people who love masks, I will be a satisfied artist.

In a small suburb south-east of Mexico City live Delfino Castillo Alonso and his wife Angela Torres de Castillo. They both create a unique type of masks work used for the Charro or Country Gentleman carnival. Mr. Castillo carries on a tradition passed down from his great grandfather to his grandfather and to Mr. Castillo of making masks out of wax. The masks are primarily worn by Carnival masqueraders in small towns around Mexico City and the State of Mexico. The masks are primarily used for the Traje (Suit) de Charro or de Ledita. Technique: The masks are made out of wax formed over plaster of Paris mold. The process begins by placing 3 layers of starched cotton cloth (manta) over the plaster mold. Then the cotton layer is painted pink with a forchina powder to attain the color of the skin. The painted cloth mask is then let to dry for 5 hours under the sun. Ingot bee wax is melted and poured over the cloth mask. This particular and unique technique allows for a very realistic facial features of the mask. The masks are enhanced with detail painting around the eyes, cheeks and forehead. The addition of eyebrows, mustaches, and beards made from ixtle (agave fiber) and horse's tail to create different characters such as the Charros. The mask has gold teeth. The dancer attaches the mask to his face using the color ribbon in the mask forehead.
