In a small suburb south-east of Mexico City live Delfino Castillo Alonso and his wife Angela Torres de Castillo. They both create a unique type of masks work used for the Charro or Country Gentleman carnival. Mr. Castillo carries on a tradition passed down from his great grandfather to his grandfather and to Mr. Castillo of making masks out of wax. The masks are primarily worn by Carnival masqueraders in small towns around Mexico City and the State of Mexico. The masks are primarily used for the Traje (Suit) de Charro or de Ledita. Technique: The masks are made out of wax formed over plaster of Paris mold. The process begins by placing 3 layers of starched cotton cloth (manta) over the plaster mold. Then the cotton layer is painted pink with a forchina powder to attain the color of the skin. The painted cloth mask is then let to dry for 5 hours under the sun. Ingot bee wax is melted and poured over the cloth mask. This particular and unique technique allows for a very realistic facial features of the mask. The masks are enhanced with detail painting around the eyes, cheeks and forehead. The addition of eyebrows, mustaches, and beards made from ixtle (agave fiber) and horse's tail to create different characters such as the Charros. The mask has gold teeth. The dancer attaches the mask to his face using the color ribbon in the mask forehead.

"Believing that the purpose of art is to explore humanity and that art comes alive when it relates to people's lives, my art draws on multicultural themes and engages participation. Working as a bridge between cultures has led me to develop diverse themes steeped in myth, ritual, and archetype. I've created over 600 metal sculptured masks and have performed with them throughout the world (thus far in 29 countries). By studying the myths and mask-work of eastern and western cultures, I continue to infuse my art with this timeless material.

Suson Launey's distinctive yarn masks have become a common sight in both the men's and women's Mardi Gras runs in Tee Mamou, located on Mamou Prairie near Iota, Louisiana. Iota is home of the most conservative Country Mardi Gras Run in all of Louisiana. " Imagine an island where all the earth?s reusable items wash upon it?s shore, and from that incredible resource emerge a race of creatures who create their own culture, royal court and deities. Santa Cruz artist, Rhan Wilson has not only imagined such a place, but has created many of its inhabitants as well, all from materials that he realized were still too useful to have simply thrown away. Rhan calls these creations ?Castaways", their Gods ?Jugheads?, and has brought them together for you in this art exhibit entitled,"From the Temple of Castaway Island."

NOVICA ARTIST "I was born in 1946 in Ancash, Peru. I am a self-taught artist, dedicating myself to ceramics and craftmaking since my youth. I specialize in masks influenced by the Vicus, Mochica, and Nazca cultures. I focus largely on the mix of form and color, and despite a lack of formal training I have created a unique, personal style. I try to always remember my roots, while also learning from my readings and travels. Everyday I hope to improve myself, and achieve a style that is both gratifying for me and for those who are interested in my work. Now that I know my art will reach many people, I will dedicate all my efforts and emotion into creating pieces which will resonate in the hearts and minds of my future following. Thank you."

Sally Thielen, a Chippewa artist, strives to create ?Art with harmony and balance of ancient and contemporary ideas?. These magnificent Raku Porcelain masks are striking portraits of individual native americans. NOVICA ARTIST "Once I have the piece in front of me I begin to imagine what I will carve and how I will carve it ..." ?Hello, my name is Rutilio Pascual and I was born on October 6, 1958, in Ocumicho, Michoacan. Since I was a child, I worked in agriculture, a very enduring labor with little or no profit. When we got married, my wife Tomasa began elaborating ceramic figurines to help me with our household expenses. She always told me that I should also work with ceramics, but I continued in agriculture until she convinced me to switch over. It was nine years ago that my cousins taught me how to make wooden masks, and now I?m continuing the trade on my own.

Metalmasks With emphasis from primitive to high technology and engaging ancient and contemporary imagery, I create three dimensional works of art with an abstract compositional awareness. Applying familiar organic and industrial materials - steel, copper, brass, feathers, bones, beads, yarn, paint and glass - my mixed media constructions combine elements of sculpture, painting and collage. My vision: to take altered old, discarded materials and create fine art that arouses emotion, thought, discussion and interaction.

Huichol Art & Legend Ramon de la Torre, Huichol indian, artist and artisan, has collected these legends from the elder Huichol people. It has taken him almost 30 years of work. Ramon has worked with these legends as themes for his pictures. Mauricia is following her father's steps, adding her style. Our planet today is in great economic and climatic turmoil. We have much to learn from a culture which has withstanded nature's and history's turmoils with a low-impact philosophy centered in deep relationships with our real sources of well-being. The legends and pictures of the Huicholes speak of the way they relate to the sun, to corn, flowers, deer, death, the stars, the wind and the sea. The Huichol people also have their own version of the great flood.

Janis Stevens has been doing portraits for twenty years professionally. She has a Master of Science in Art Education from Florida International University and taught art in the Monroe County School system for ten years. As much as she loved teaching it left little time to do her own work so for the last two years she has concentrated on painting in oil and sculpting. In the last few years she has concentrated on figurative sculpture in clay and added life sized three dimensional portraits to her repertoir.
