• I thought perhaps it would be a good idea to share shows and festivals we are all aware of in the mask making field(both past and present) for the up and coming mask maker and other mask enthusiasts.

I of course suggest the Mask Market in New Orleans and Fantasy Fest in Key West. These are obvious to some of us but perhaps unknown to others. Renaissance Faires have been productive for me as well. Most areas have at least one, maybe more. I personally show at Minnesota Renfest, Colorado Renfest,
Kansas City Renfaire, Texas Renfaire, and Scarborough Faire in Dallas, plus a few smaller midwestern one weekend shows (as opposed to the seven and eight weekend shows above).

I have done various fashion shows and art shows as well as a handful of Sci/Fi-Fantasy shows but none have been as successful as the prior shows I mentioned. If anyone else has anything to offer I would love to hear about them.

• The market is handled by the French Market Corporation in New Orleans. Contact them for the application. I personally bring three hundred to three hundred fifty masks. But every maskmaker is different. I just approach it from this angle. I can't sell alot if I dont bring alot. Let me know if you need anything else.

• Greetings.
Last year I organized the 1st Theatrical Mask Festival here in Puerto Rico. Managed to produce ot for $1000.00. Four weekends of different mask performers showing their work. Some night of short pieces , some of full length shows. The thestre space we have is very small (75 seats) and so performers could not make much money. (Everyone shared in the box office. at some point I would like to develop this into an international event. right now it seems it might happen every 2 years. not sure about this year.
I will say that we filled the theatre each night and may people bought festival passesand came and saw everything.

• Helge and Susan, Yes I would like to talk about an internacional mask festival. It could contain so many aspects. Mask making and mask performance (which I'm mostly interested in), mask processions, workshop for different age groups, street work, etc. I think that it is a very rich field. I also think that starting small is a good idea. By that I don't mean numbers exactly but that a festival of this sort keep as a priority a generous space for communication and sharing both for people who perhaps don't have much experience of masks and also for mask performers who are interested in each others techniques, stories etc. Lets keep talking.

• Susan, Helge, and Deborah,

Vincent here. I love the idea. Count me in. I am not sure about how the execution of such an idea on an international level would work. I and many others I am sure would have trouble traveling internationally as well. What if we had a truly international festival on both continents both occuring on the same dates with the same artists and maybe in several locations with each local show being ran by the local mask artist. I am sure we could arrange for each maskmaker who participates to be represented at each market through the mail. Just a thought. Something like "World Wide Mask Day". Let me know.

• Susan,

As far as my prices go I keep them consistant with my website, which averages between $45.00 - $75.00. I do have some higher and lower of course but most fall in that range. I wish I knew what the danish equivalent is but no luck there. Let me know your feelings on the matter. I do know my masks sell for less than most of the other leather maskmakers. Hope this helps.

• Susan and Helge,
a festival in Denmark sounds great.I also just read Vincent's reply about people getting there. Here are some thoughts covering different aspects of a festival.
1. Mask performance. I am a member of the Magdalena Project which has festivals in different parts of the world New Zealand, Argentina, Norway, Denmark, United Kingdom) and generally speaking the performers pay their own way to the Festival. If there is an official invitation, we can take that to our local arts councils etc and try and raise the airfares that way. The performers would need a place to stay and food. And a place to perform.
2. Parades or procession or out door events.
I'm thinking of the beautiful images I have seen of the Dusk People and also thinking of groups that work with communities to create masks with local people and then create the outdoor spectacle or procession. A workshop space is of course necessary and materials. Perhaps there might be local businesses that might be willing to sponsor the workshop leaders and materials??
3.Exhibits. This would probably be especially interesting to maskmakers who do not necesarily perform with their masks. They could send their masks to the exhibit. Festival organizers would have to take great care of course of the masks . Workshops or sessions of sharing techniques would be excellent if the maskmakers could get to the festival.
I am wondering how we could organize this internationally, dividing the work so that the weight of organizing is shared.
Getting excited

• Hi:
It is a wonderfull idea this of a mask festival. I and my group organized one in 1995 at the Kulturhuset in Stockholm. We had seminars, performances, workshops and an exposition of masks in theater, art and ritual. We gott many people visiting but we didnt get all the money we asked for and couldnt bring all the groups we wanted to perform. If you are organizing a festival count with me, even if I live in Stockholm maybe I can help with the experience I gott.

• Hi.

Should have wrote words about this a long time ago but we have decided to postpone the work with a mask festival.
The main reason is lack of time right now and as many of you knows: It's time to take it easy for a while due to the heart problems a couple of months ago.

The time frame now is 2004 and after revitalizing during summer and a conference in Finland in August it's time to think the idea over again.

;)
