MATERIALS: Horn molds

   • Does anyone have any advice of where to get horn molds. Currently I am using actual cow horns but they are hard to find and occasionally break because I bake them at a low temp which tends to make them a bit brittle. I would like to find hard epoxy or silicone molds of cow horns but can't seem to locate any. Any advice? Thanks-EMI

   • Hi. About Horn molds. You don't say how you use the horns or the molds, so it is hard to picture what you are talking about. Please take a look at my website: www.dominicanmasks.com , I use a mold made out of plaster. It is molded on a cow's horn. spectacular cow's horns are hard to come by. I remember going to a neighborhood butcher in the DR about 4 years ago to get horns . The guy took off on his moped and disappeared for about 15 minutes . He later showed up with about a half a dozen horns. Some of them still had maggots on them! He said he rode to the local dump.!!! To bring them through customs I washed and painted them and was able to get them in. I would not try that again. It is kind of risky. Plaster is the way to go. Good luck to you.    • I wanted a mold for deer antlers, so I bought a set I liked on eBay and am going to have a rubber mold made from them. If ever I need anything a little wierd like that, I look on eBay. If I were braver I'd try making a mold from them myself using one of the many kits available from places like Dick Blick, but I just assume let someone who knows what they're doing do it for me! Campbell Plaster and Iron in Rutland, VT makes my molds for me. I did make a positive cast from the antlers so I would have something to play with as I work on my deer mask.

   • This is an old post but my advice is to make your own molds out of tin foil.
