• I want to make a leather mask as a homeschooling project. And i would like to have some insight on how to do this. And all the tools and other things I would need and also how to shape it so it would fit. So if someone or somepeople could please help me out and tell me some useful tips. It would be greatly appreciated. Please reply to this post or e-mail me at ltj_newt@hotmail.com

• Hi:
Its great that you are interested in making leather masks but its very difficult to explain the process just in few words. I recommed you to find the Thurston James book "The prop builders mask-making handbook". There will you find all you need to know on making leather masks and other masks too. They may have it at your nearest library or maybe you can ordered there.
Good luck
Augusto.

• Hi, I just finished a leather mask and found it to be very easy to do. I first made a paper mache mask with very sculptural feachers. I covered this with tin foil and embedded the face into moist sand to get the impression. Remove the paper mache mask and pour plaster of paris into the moist sand. Let it set for awhile. When it can be handled remove it from the sand and air dry it or put into a 200 degree oven for overnight. You are now ready to mold your leather. I sprayed my plaster with a clear acrylic and covered it with tin foil to be safe. I soaked my leather in very hot water for about a half hour. I then draped my leather over the plaster batt and started to mold into the crevices of the eyes, nose etc. As it is drying you will have to do this many times. After it dries you can paint glue into the backside of the mask. I soaked a pc. of felt in wood glue and molded that to the inside of the mask and let it dry. The mask I made is to be hung on the wall so if you want a pc that you can wear I would suggest you make a mold out of rigid wrap cloth and make sure you leave the nostrils clear and be sure and cut out the nostrils and eye sockets on the leather also. Good luck
