• .... wounds to be healed...

... ALL PEOPLES IN THE HISTORY OF MANKIND, WERE GIVEN
A MESSAGER FROM THE CREATOR...
A WAY OF LIFE TO WHICH THEY COULD LIVE AND RESPECT
EACH OTHER, AND GROW.

EVERY MESSAGE FROM THE CREATOR IS THE SAME...
EACH SUITED FOR THEIR OWN LAND, AND CLIMATE AND LANGUAGE... AND DIFFERENT TIME!

WHEN WILL THE TWO-LEGGEDS LEARN THIS FIRST
LESSON?

Why and for what reason did these peoples from the "old world"
suffer the hardships the trip across the great waters!

Why did these "boat people" think that they could continue
to abuse the earth? Why did these "seekers for a better way of life" think that this land was the "new world"?

Why did OUR white brothers NOT understand that the garden
of eden that they landed on was the GARDEN of some many different and good foods and medicines?

Were the people or "indians" of this land greedy, and why did
they NOT FENSE in and control these lands so their
leaders could "let them eat cake"?

• .... words to heal?

What did the chiefs or leaders of the old world believe in?
Did these leaders all pray to the same god? Did these
kings and queens share their lifestyle with their people
has did the elders and leaders of the new world did?

Did the " seekers" from the old world find a land that
was good for their children to grow?

Did The "boat people" remember the ways that their forefathers
lived before the dark ages of their history?

Did the boat people all share their gifts with one another, and did they respect everyones way to pray to the same GOD, CREATOR?

• .... continued...

For Man to survive the abuses to the mother earth, they must remember the reason why we should live and respect ALL
the things that are sacred!

EVERYTHING IS SACRED!!!!

.... What do we "NEED" to survive? And why and for what reason
do people think that they should have everything the WANT, and
NOT suffer for that WAY of looking and living that way of life?

Long before the boat people landed here in this land..
the native people's of the northeast ( the people of the longhouse)
SUFFERED for their greed and way of life which not as the creator
intented! That is why the creator asked the prayers of the people,
and gave them a messager so they could live in peace with one another. A Great LAW in which was used by our white brothers
to form their Way of life!
i honor the foundation of law of this country, It was changed
so that our white brothers could understand and fine tune!
This way of life is called DEMOCRACY! A WAY of LIFE that
was found here in this NEW WORLD, and was different and more sharing than the way of life from the old world! This form or way of life has spread to many lands across the earth! Is it a better
way of life, is it better or different because it based on a
savage way of life, or a way of living in a good WAY?

....

• ... What are healing words...

Why do SOME our brother redmen say WE IROQUOIS Only
care for the iroquois, and is that true?

Why must the indian people forgive the unforgivable, the old wounds that keep us from again teaching WHY a way of life of
respecting all things in creation is NOT ONLY a NATIVE or INDIAN
OR 'injun" way of life!

Here is truth... Just after the travels of Lewis and Clark,
the Iroquois people send a party of our peoples to spread a way of unity, a way of life which respects and protects and was proven
to be a good way of life, TO THE PEOPLES of the WEST. A way in which if the people of the west could adapt, they could deal with the hazzards of the abuse that some of boat people still remembered. These iroquois ( a small party of lightly armed men)
medicine people, were captured and put on trial! These iroquois prisoners were came in peace, and tried to share OUR great LAW
given to our peacemaker!

It is said that all those on trail were told "that IF YOU BELIEVE
that you GREAT LAW was given to your people by the great spirit, then the great spirit will enable to jump across this great ravine!
All the iroquois but TWO jumped to their death!

The two that were left to survive had their NOSES CUT OFF.
WITH the clear message that the iroquois should keep their noses
out of Lakota country!

THIS IS THE POWER LESSON THAT WAS HELD IN THE SPIRIT
MASK CALLED NO NOSE! THIS WAS THE MASK THAT CHIEF
JOSEPH BRANT("Thayendanegeu") carried!

i (kevin smith) told this STORY to a couple of sundance chiefs
after a ceremony sweat lodge called "the blood of chiefs"
ceremony! Later a SIOUX(ASSINIBOINE) MEDICINEMAN NAMED
Frank Whitwright gave me which regrets for these actions of his
people, and SAID " these iroquois feel under the hot blood
of a group of Teton-Sioux Warriors on the WARpath after
the ill intentions of Lewis and Clark( who did not honor or pay
tribute to the crossing of their people's LAND)

So you SEE... These WERE the wounds from the PAST that whiteman did NOt KNOW UNTIL THIS MOment!!!!

So in closing ...

• ... CLOSING...

So i WAS send here in the WEST. san jose... By my chief giggy hill
with instructions " GO AND GAIN THE RESPECT FROM THE WESTERN PEOPLES OF THE WEST... FOR THE MEDICINE SOCIETIES OF THE WEST!"

I SING and pray the pipe songs from the people of the west.
And i sing the songs of other great peoples of the west too!
For to gain respect, i found i had togive respect! And as Firekeeper to the ELDERS here in the west(many winters of traditional elders) in san pedro,ca. i gained respect for
the people of the eastern medicine societies!

THUS NOW i CAN have MY SAY!!!!!

Because a another medicine person name LoGAN from my people
SUNDANCED WITH THE SIOUX. HE GOT SCARED UP. BURNT, AND LOSS SLEEP, HE DID NOT CHANGE! THE MESSAGE is
I DON'T HAVE TO SUNDANCE AND PIERCE TO BECOME A MEDICINE PERSON! WE THE PEOPLE OF THE EAST HAVE OUR OWN WAYS AND RITES THAT SANCTION OUR MEDICINE PEOPLE!

AND SO YOU PEOPLE IN THE OLD WORLD SHOULD REMEMBER
TOO... NOT ALL INDIANS SUNDANCE, NOT ALL INDIANS
CARRY FEATHERS, NOT ALL INDIANS CARRY ON THE CYCLE
OF VIOLENCE OF THE SOME OF WESTERN INDIANS AND COWBOYS!

AND IS THERE A REASON THAT THE OLD WORLD THINKS
THAT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE HAVE SCREWED all the indians
of their lands!

By the way, i come the only reservation of the iroquois (six nations) that have all six nations at one place! And IT
was our reserve, and our leaders that gained the respect
from the world courts in 1929!!!!
So you just might want to like to hear from the indians
that serve the whole, the world!

NO EGO, BUT CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS LONG OVER DUE!!!!

MANY PRAYERS AND WARM WISHES

lIKE I SAID, THESE ARE THE THINGS THAT SOME 'INJUNS"
don't want said, and maybe they might get offended!

later i might tell you my views to WHY the mohawks and sencas
made war on the french catholics(and the HURONS)! Another
OLD wound that must be told!!!!

• I agree that it is not cool to try to sell masks on the basis that they are "sacred" However, the writer who started this topic seems to feel that because of his heritage he has a monpoly on spirituality.
In my work I always open myself up to the spirit that is inspiring me to make the mask, and hope to channel some bit of divine energy into my work. Therefore, I feel that EVERY one of my pieces is sacred. I too am FULL BLOODED, a full mix of apache, cherokee, Mexican, french, scottish, german, and Japanese. Does this mean that I cannot listen to the spirits? no way!
If I want to sell one of my masks, I am sharing what I have channeled with others. So lighten up and get back to work.

• NOBODY LIKES THE "FOOL ON THE HILL"!
And "yes maybe i am a fool NOT to put a price TAG on
sacred instructions and things. Because so many of our
young people have taken up some bad habits from others!
These is WHY SO FEW of us traditionalists have a hard time living in this a world that can be bought!

WE can NO LONGER point fingers at who is to blame as to the condition of our earth. Lets just call it Naturalism or environmentalism, and MOVE ON with the Difficut
work that is before us all!

• During the past 60 years, I have experienced many cultures in which masks played various and diverse roles, from the sacred, profane, religious, psychological, teaching, ceremonial, theatrical, dance, performances, film, video, and we can even get into how "makeup" and other face adornments are a form of masks......that's the point. Masks are very powerful entitities in themselves, no matter what use you 'intend' for them......masks are not only sacred to your purpose, but to any you designate or create a use for. As an artist and mask maker for the past 40 years, I have always said, "......that masks are one form of art that comes to life." That this web site can represent all the various aspects from historical, construction of, distribution of, use of, source of materials, opinions stated, etc......and we also have the opportunity to read things, like the wonderfully detailed, historical information that Kevin wrote, about his people and the meaning masks has for them. This web site is doing an excellent job of providing us with a forum of varied and diverse sources of information having to do with MASKS. Bravo. This is why I love your site!!!

• Wow! Understood.

Welcome to the Maskmakersweb. Your words of wisdom shed light on the truth. These stories make for greater understanding. This site has allowed us freedom of expression through the sharing of our mask making techniques and masks. It also provides us the opportunity to write articles that educate. I understand your passion. Many of us share similar passions with our race, culture and heritage. It is through our mask making that we also connect with the positive side of humanity on this site, as well as provoke a reaction and tell a story in our lives and professions.

I detest what some of my ancestors have done. However,I have ancestors on both sides of the spectrum, native and european. History has shown that the stories, bad and good, are passed down through masks and traditions such as festivals.

I have learned to observe the values and importance of cultural awareness. Art is my passion, not politics or old world misconceptions. Therefore, kind Edwin Silverheels, I would really like to see you share examples of such mask images with us in order to encourage a greater understanding between mask makers. Would the sharing of tribal images of such masks be allowed for those of us not of the Native American Tribal Nations? If so, please do us the honor of posting pictures in the gallery section so that our site may be a window to the world in showing the true purpose behind the masks.

Respectfully,

Rozani Navas-Smith
