• This is Jeanne' - New Hampshire USA. I'm wondering if anyone can discribe catro' Pedra to me. It's a word I've read in reference to mache. Also I would like to comunicate with mache artists. What binders are you using for exampel. What is the thinist work, that has strenght, you've created. I'll be happye to share anything I've learned after 20 years of maskmaking - 15 ofit in mache. Thanks, Hope to hear from folk. Would love to talk to other people that are mask artists. - Though I live in an art rich community I am the sole mask maker.

• Hi Jeanne:
About what you call "catro' pedra" I think that you mean "cart?n piedra" that is a thicker type of papier mach? that they use in Spain to make big puppets. They use a type of cardboard and a very strong carpenters glue.

• Hi Jeanne,
Here in Puerto Rico carton de piedra is used for making the vejigante masks. Very strong and a smooth finish. Great for masks that are streamlined and the design is simple.
i use a combination of newspaper and brown paper, alternating the layers. 4 layers in total. I use wallpaper paste mixed with white glue. I also put wire around the rims of my masks. Here I sweat so much while performing with them that the edges (particularly under the chin) need to be reinforced. I have masks that are 20 years old and are still strong. Keep in touch
