ARCHIVED POSTINGS: Mask and Children's Theater RSS

• Hello,
I find it alarming that in the United States people see masks used primarily in children's theater. Please don't assume that i am anti-children's theater but it is shocking to me that Masks are viewed as such.
Does anyone else acknowledge this trend? And if such a trend is occuring is anyone attempting to dismantle the stereotypes?
thanks,
chris

• Hi Chris,
I think I know what you mean and also agree with Sunhawk. I think that if there is a problem it is not that masks are perceived to belong to children's theatre but perhaps the notion of children's theatre being something "less than" and so the quality tends to be banal.I think puppetry is also lumped in their with masks and children's theatre. However, I think that wherever they are is good. Let there be an abundance of masks and mask performance. Seeing stuff that I judge to be banal only inspires me to experiment more and try to improve/perfect my performing.
cheers
Deborah Hunt
