Hi Sissel.
I would like to pass on this information to the best of my knowledge. One would wear whatever was purchased from a particular merchant or made by someone's own hand. Whether from Versaille, Venice or the local garb monger, the styles could range from animal masks to elaborate plumes. Venetian masks were quite popular. If you made your own, it would depend on the resources at hand in your country of origin. Typically, the coutillion masks could have stems for the ladies and ties for the men. It could be a mask of satire or of disguise. Also, if there is a theme, it would stand to reason that the masks would reflect that theme. I would say that the authenticity would be in the materials used to produce the masks, just as in the garments of re-enactors.
Much Success on your plans.
