MAKING MASKS: Stick attachment RSS

    • I have been making decorative mask for a while and have been working on wearables lately. I live in Louisiana and there is a demand for quality ball masks. Anyway, my question is about adding a stick handle. What is the best way to attach it? On the back, or the side of the mask? I am not sure what method to use so that it does not interfere with to look or fit of the mask. If someone knows of a site that shows a picture of the back of a stick mask, that would be great.

      Thanks

    • Hi Chowse.

How are things in Lousiana? Are you in N'awlins? Have you recovered well from Katrina? I am glad that you are making masks. Stems are easy to do and it's a matter of preference. They can be centered or put on either side. I'll be glad to show you. Just drop me an e-mail at rozani@entercomp.com and I'll send you an image. However, it's really self explanatory.

I will explain: Choose a flat area of the mask on the inner side. Do this with hot glue. Be sure that the stem is glued down the entire side of the mask for good support. If your mask will have a frame for feathers or some kind of tall crown, make sure you extend the stick into that upper portion of the mask as to support its weight. If your mask is flat, you can even place a stick in the middle.

Make some of the stems on the right and others on the left. Or give your customers the option to attach them while they wait. Keep in mind that the part that is glued to the mask should not be too thick as to damage the mask. Any ornamentations or wide areas can be above and below the point of attachment such as a Fleur-des-lis.

      Hope this helps.

      Rozani
