    • Hello fellow maskmakers! I'm in the exciting process of setting up an on-line shop selling my masks. I am very much in the early stage of my business start- up and would love any advice or just exchange of experiences from anyone who's been in the same boat- pricing, supplies etc..
      Most grateful for any response..

    • I'm in the same stage. Pricing's about all I can advise on myself unless you have specific questions (and where's your site, I'd like to see it!)
Make absolutely, positively sure you're profiting. It sounds obvious, but it's easy to undervalue your work; we're used to mass-production prices and artists often feel like pricing their own stuff too high indicates a big head. Go through and deduct materials costs from your prices and see how much you're making by the hour - with a lot of artists it's less than minimum wage. What sort of masks are you doing, in what media? Depending on your target market the prices might vary - if your masks are all done in imported crystal and gold leaf, the materials cost is already high, and $10 is a lot less of a difference to a buyer when it's between $220 and $230 than it is between $40 and $50.
      Good luck!

    • I, too, am embarking on the website and sales portion of my work. My hope is that I can market to those I work with on a regular basis - for me educators and students (I'm a drama educator working specifically with mask theatre). Finding a starting market so that you can see who your buyers will be is an important first step. Pricing, too. Definitely don't underprice your work. You're worth it.
