    • Hello. I love this site and have some info that I'd like to share.  icon smile  I love using liquid starch for papier mache . It dries clear and there is no mixing. It works really well with craft tissue and crepe paper which I use for color. It is available in most department stores in America. There are two brands. One is Sta Flo and the other is Niagra. I prefer the Sta Flo.

    • Hi Susan:
I think that this liquid starch is what is used to iron shirts, to make hard collars. In Swedish it is called st?rkelse, I hope it is more or less the same in Danish.

    • Hi Susan.

Augusto is correct. It is exactly the same ingredient used in the stiffening of collars, creases, etc. There is a powdered form which must be mixed with water. Another form is the spray. Then, there is the liquid which is marketed in a plastic jug.

      Now, the tissue:

Craft tissue is sometimes referred to as silk tissue or gift tissue. It is not the nose tissue or toilet tissue variety. It is marketed in large sheets, small squares and circles and sometimes shredded. Most popularly used in gift bags to add color and protect delicate objects. They are used in the making of flowers and pinatas, as well.

Florists also use a similar type of tissue paper which has a waxed coating. This is used to wrap around fresh flower stems and available through wholesale florist suppliers. The craft related tissues are quite colorful and are packaged as either Bleed or Bleed Resistant. School suppliers usually carry the squares and circles.

      Hope this helps.

    • I just found this site and am enjoying it very much. I also use StaFlo liquid starch both for diping my strips of paper in and in the blender when I make pulp, but since I'm new to mask making I am worried about its duriblity. Have you had any problems with it flaking apart, etc. ? --am

    • Bumping this thread, as I have a newfound interest in making crafts using this starch. Will let you know how it turns out.

    • I need to make a paper miche pinata for my wife:
I have a beach ball and intend to cover it with strips of newspaper soaked in liqued starch and let it dry and paint it with the kids. Is there anything else I should do?

    • Hi Anonymous.

Oh what fun! Is this going to be a pinata mask? Will you be painting masks on the beach ball? It would be fun to paint a face and quite easy to do. It can be an animal face or anything imaginative. Even crepe paper or tissue can be added for hair or a moustache.

Here's a tip just in case you haven't tried this: It will be easier to handle the beach ball if you balance it on a big bowl or pot. Do a few layers and let dry overnight. Turn it over and do the other side the next day. Do not deflate until everything is hard. Don't forget to create it strong enough to support the weight of the candy. Also, you may want to do a flap that opens with a string instead of having it broken.

      Hope this helps.

      Rozani
