To start, I've gone through the rest of the making masks threads and no one has touched on the subject of noh masks.
I have many years of formal art education, but for some reason I have never tried my hands at mask making (outside of some paper mache a long time ago). I want to get into mask carving, but have no idea where to start. What kind of wood should be used? Cheap wood for practice? Wood for a final product? What kinds of tools will I need? I want to do it in as traditional a way as possible- no power tools or anything of the sort.
How does one go about measuring to create the mask? What are the basic steps in it's creation? Can anyone link me to some good tutorials (I've looked online and only found paper mache lessons), or know of any books on the subject?
I know I'm asking alot of questions, and I'm sure I'll have more in the future, but I do appreciate your time and thank you in advance. And it is in the name of art and culture!
Anyways, if you want to talk to me directly my AIM screen name is CrabBattle2099. Look forward to hearing from you!
