• Hello,

. I am currently doing Theatre Arts in my school and as part of my syllabus I have to undertake a Research Commission in which I choose an aspect of a theatre tradition.

My topic is the use of masks in Greek Tragedy, in the play "Oedipus the King" by Sophocles. As part of the Drama Research Commission, I have to find a "primary source" - someone who would be willing to answer questions on the topic.

I would like to ask , whether anyone would be kind enough to answer some of my questions regarding Masks in Greek Tragedy, such as:

- How and which kind of masks could be used for the role of Oedipus
- How masks can be worn by an actor in a modern production

and a few other questions. You are not obliged to answer anything you don't know.

I sincerely hope you can help me, I won't ask much of your time,

Thank you,

Caro coraonline@hotmail.com

• Hi Caro,

I am not an expert but did my dissertation on 'Mask and the Actor' and have some references that you may find useful. I am not a primary source however but some of the resources I found may lead you to a primary source. Chris Vervain and David Wiles may be your best bet, if you can contact them and get them to be primary sources. The references that you may find useful are:

Coldiron, M. (2002) "Masks in the Ancient and Modern Theatre, New Theatre Quartely, Volume XVIII, Part 4 (NTQ 72), (pp393-394) - Cambridge University Press

Marshall, C. W. (1999) "Some fifth-Century Masking conventions", Greese & Rome, 2nd Ser,k Vol 46, No2, (pp(188-202) - The Classical Association

I hope this helps.
