MAKING MASKS: Padding RSS

    • Hi,

I started making paper mache masks about six months ago, and I?m addicted!!! When I was initially searching for mask making instructions, I found tons of great information on this site, and so here is a huge ?Thank You!? to everyone who posted their tips, tricks and advice for novices like me.

I finished several masks and I?m pretty happy with the results, but I think they?d be more comfortable to wear if they had some padding. I found some 6" x 4" x 1/8" foam sheets with adhesive backing that I thought would be perfect, but the adhesive is very strong, and the foam can?t be repositioned or removed without ripping and possibly damaging the mask. This makes it very difficult to get the foam sheets to smoothly conform to the contours of the mask. Also, since they?re relatively small, three or four foam sheets would be needed to cover the inside of a full face mask, which would leave seams.

Does anyone have any advise or ideas on how to apply seamless padding to the inside of a mask? Right now I?m considering just cutting small pieces to apply only around the nose and other key areas.

      Thanks!

    • Hi,

I understand your problems with fitting and the masks being uncomfortable having had the same issue. I was taught to use small bits of foam padding in various areas such as forhead / chin / cheeks etc. This will keep the mask off your face, and also helps prevent sweat affecting the mask, as well as allowing air to circulate.

      Hope this helps

    • I'm going to take your advice and use smaller pieces of padding on strategic areas. I appreciate your help. Thanks!

    • No Problem, I hope it works out for you. I have however checked my masks and the padding is abut 1" deep. You may have to layer your small pieces to get the mask to sit properly. Having said this, my masks are Commedia Masks and quite heavy as they have big noses etc! Alan
