    • Hi, i'm completely new to mask making but i have a big project. One of my best friends is the designer of a NYC fashion line and his logo is an image he designed of the mask of Edward, the Black Prince. I'm on a mission to make this mask in 3-D form for his birthday present (and it will likely be used in fashion photoshoots with the clothing). I was going to pay to have it the mask made but I am a broke student who is very artistic so decided to do it myself. To see the logo visit www.deedznyc.com. The mask would consist of a tall crown that fits around the head with the face frame. What would you suggest in terms of materials, structure, finish, ect? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

    • Hi.

What is your name? Big projects call for big research. Start by trying different media to find what works best for you. I prefer paper or fabric mache. Once you have experimented with making shapes and making an armature, I suggest the following:

Start with an existing neutral face form and attach the crown to it. Use masking tape to hold the crown in place until it dries. Wire can be wrapped and covered for additional support. However, everything must be worked out before you stgart applying the paper mache.

      Try any of the following:

Plastic or acrylic mask form $4:00 - $5.00 at local craft stores. This is used as a structure for building paper mache over this and then remove the mask afterwards.

Liquid Starch - use straight out of the Sta Flo bottle and do not dilute.

White Glue - Dilute with water just a little bit.

Paper or cotton fabric strips. Some fabrics will not stick unless they are completely sticky.

Ultimately, the paper or fabric will be dipped into the adhesive medium and overlapped on to the mask form and the surface of your armature.

Just remember to experiment first and then choose what works best.

      Hope this helps.

      Rozani
