I need to still make over 100 more masks and i am out of ideas. i have made 4 or 5 sets of different themes (moon mask, flower pot mask, ivy covered "mid summer night's dream" masks, etc.)
Basicaly i am decorating those cheep black plastic masks but trying to make them NOT look cheep. If anyone has any ideas please email me: EquinoxAutumn@aol.com

• icon biggrin Hi Chrissy of Ohio - USA
I am Susan of Denmark, From Maskmakersweb.
Here is what I would do:
Find face shaped stones in nature. Wash Them. Cover them with tinfoil. Get loads of bits of fabric - clothes, scarfs etc....fancy ones. glitter flitter. Soak them in strong wallpaper paste - make sure the fabric is all wet. Then press out most of it. Shape a mask over a stone. You can do the eye holes at once. Thin fabric = 3-4 layers. Thick only one. Put stones with masks on in your kitchen oven at 150 degrees ( european ) After a few hours the masks are dry. ( STAY AT HOME !!) take them off stone,Cut and decorate a bit if you like.
They can turn out lovely. And its great fun. AND INEXPENSIVE AND FAST.
Once I made 40 pr day this way - to use for a special occasion - like you. Its ten years ago and some are still on people's walls.
Just an idea.
Good luck Susan

• Hi Chrissy.

You mentioned a flower pot mask? Have you tried overlapping petals from silk flowers? I don't know if that is how you did your ivy leaves as well. It is an awesome effect, though time consuming if you cover the entire mask. However, select areas such as the eyes and mask border to save time.

Another idea is using ribbons and scraps. Choose solid or mixed colors, metallic, sheer, whatever. The thin ribbons can be attached on the sides. Also, beaded trim glues on quite easily with tacky glue. Fabric scraps can be overlapped and applied with a 1 to 1 Elmer's glue mixture. Even stickers work great in a pinch.

My favorite is bleed resistant tissue paper. Apply it with diluted Elmer's. You can overlap, wrinkle, make swirls, whatever. Just apply it like decoupage. I suggest Elmer's because it can be painted on. Add spray glitter for a real quickie. Wally World (a/k/a Wal Mart for the benefit of the viewers) has it in the craft section.

I will also suggest taking several of these plastic masks and using them as forms. In other words, use the tissue or fabric dipped in Liquid Starch. Stick directly to the plastic on top. Blow dry them or leave overnight. When dried, just pop them off. Only used the liquid starch for this process, not the glue. Sta Flo Liquid Starch is also available at Wally World or Winn Dixie, at least in my area. You can trim them when dry.

Hope this helps. icon smile

• Great ideas guys!!! thank you both so much!!! I never thought of making them instead of just using the plastic masks-that is so cool...the rock thing is a great idea...sounds easy too, i think i could use that with the kids in the preschool i work at, they would love doing that!!! I do have one other question though that i forgot to ask: for the bride and groom i wanted to make special masks...for the bride i have no ideas but the groom i was thinking something to make him a "knight in shining armor" any thoughts on that?
thanks again, you guys are great!!

• Hi...i have a quik idea...
If its the Bride and Groom...ivest the time to makethese more special and stand out...you might try a plaster mask...i would use plaster infused gauze...like casting bandages...you should be able to get them at any pharmacy...just remember to put plenty of vaselin on the recruits face...escpcially the hairline and eyebrows...there are several finnishing techniques...you could add really pretty and inexpensive beads to the mask...fake eyelashes, ribbons, feathers etc...for the knight in shining armor you could maybe paint it matallic silver and make it a half mask.covering just his nose and up...like the cheap plastic ones...more embellishing i think ight take away although you could add feathers to the top and sides...hope you are able to think of something...good luc
