• Yes I've been making a few Leather masks and have been using my Glass head that I use to hold jewelry headpieces I make. I looked around locally for flat face molds with no luck and I tried to do a search on here to find out if there was any information and I didnt find any so I was wondering if anyone knew where I could get the flat face molds that I could use. Also tried an online search but I dont think I'm using the right wording.

    • Des, have you tried casting your own or another face? The techniquie is pretty easy but does take some time - best not to do your own face on your own.

Basically you put a swim cap on the subject (to protec the hair) and then use vaseline over the face to prevent sticking. Use some pieces of tissue cut to shape and vaselined over the eyes. Allow the subject to breathe either through a straw held in the mouth, or don't cover the nostrils.

Then use mod-rock or similar (basically plaster bandages) cut or torn into strips, dipped into water and layered over the face - smoth them out to get a nice clean finish and ensure that your edges are thick.

Afte the entire face is covered with 2-3 layers you need to let it dry, then carefully price off. Vaseline the inside of the mould (after sealing the mouth or nostril gaps) and place face down in a bucket or bowl of sand to seady it and keep it level. Then pour in plaster of paris or similar and allow to set.

You will probably need to tear the bandage mask to get it off, but they you have a 'flat head to wrok from.

    • Hi Des, here is a site I've found has flat mask and skull forms :

      http://www.zuckerfeather.com/ic/zfp/product/MASK%20FORMS/

If you want a more durable and permanent form, cover the eyes with duct tape on the front of the mask, and cut eye- & nose-shapes out of masking tape. Adhere the masking tape eye- & nose-shapes (adhesive-side down) to the adhesive side of the duct tape. Rub petroleum jelly all over the interior of the mask form, and pour in prepared plaster, and rock the form in your hands until the entire inner surface is covered with an approximately 5mm thick layer of plaster. Let dry, and continue to add layers, until you have your desired thickness. When finished, carefully separate the plastic form from the plaster form. The plaster form should allow to dry masks in an oven at low temps.
