Hello everyone,
I am a newbie here and just dropped in to meet you all. I have met susan and helge and am very happy with their goals and site. I would like to say to susan, that the Nordic masks.......Wow! The others, wow! Go girl. I myself choose one style of masks, West Indies style indian masks and I have no competition, anywhere. My sales are great and increasing. I try to excell at it and it is paying off for me so far. I get $120 US for a basic mask so thats not too bad for clay art. There seems to be a worldwide market out there for this type of mask and I am rolling with the idea.
My original idea? To make masks and sculptures that had little (if any) competition . I found it and the market. I found a dealer (exclusive) and they take care of all sales , advertising and shipping so I only produce my artworks, as if that wasn't enough with production of 60-80 masks a month. I have well exceeded my day jobs salary and it is low season. Yes there is a career and $$$ in mask making.
I am working on a new idea, coffee table masks, a mask on a plate with gold leafed claw/horns holding the mask adorned with precious gemstones. hummm we will see if it goes. I only use raku clay and the mask/plate weigh about 3-5 lbs. Masks are not just for hanging on a wall or wearing. The cost? depends on the gemstones mostly as each will be different.
As an artist, we must be different to be noticed but yet create what the market seeks. From what I have seen here, you all are the best of the best at your styles and creations and I hope the best for all of you.
Thanks for being here, it is nice to meet everyone that shares my passion for mask making.
Mask Makers Rule!
With love from the USVI
