Dear juanita and anonomos,
I have only made 2 with cast paper. I bought the pulp froma commercial catalog I have since lost so I dont know exactly what it was. I do remember that it was rag pulp with sizing already in it. and recommended for casting and sculpture. The mold is a life casting in hydrocal. I had no trouble with it, but the face came out thick in the nose and when i tried to refine it I either wouldn't budge or it came off in chunks. The second casting , I put the pulp in a blenderfirst and it worked a litttle better. (I am primarily a clay artist and my pieces are't meant to be worn). I thought with the paper i could eliminate the weight problem, but I sacrificed detail . Ihave gone back to clay. I am in the gallery on page 4. so ycan get an idea of what I am tryig to do. The mask called "experience " is the second one I did wioth paper, I don't have a lot o time or space to make my own pulp but I am willing to if that turns out to be the best way to go.I'm having enough trouble keeping the clay recicled and the dust away from the paper and fabric in my studio. I tend to do too many things at the same time, In a space that isn't big enough, So the fabric and trim parts end up in my bedroom.
Since I currently don't have anymore pulpI am open to take any suggestions you can gve me about the paper that will make it easier to work with. I took a night class in papermaking but she didn't do cast paper until the last night. The books aen't that helpful since they are mostly about paler making. Also I don't drive so getting supplies is sometimes difficult. (I guess I'm whineing, sorry).
I do love making the masks and have found thiis website to be great.
Thanks,
Kathy
