ARCHIVED POSTINGS: A life lived in fear is a life half lived... RSS

    • You know, aside from all the hurdles to jump involving mask making and selling art (etc) I find MYSELF holding myself back. I'm afraid of success. Terrified of becoming someone whom deserves respect and artistic acclaim. What if my art gets popular and all my creativity dries up? Will I have to run off to the hills to live the hermit's life making masks out of bark and deer droppings? Am I the only one who has this irrational fear?

    • There is a wonderful mask festival called Barkpoopararde that is entirely attended only by hermits.

While no psychological expert am I, you need help.

      OK, first, Stand up.

      Face us, and say....

&quot; I am an artist, I will not be a starving artist because that is a silly old notion. I have a talent that is something special and that most folks whish they had. As a matter of fact those folks will by my work. I will not sell myself cheap. I am not afraid of success because success feeds me and food is good. Yum.

      There ...all better?

I held myself back once, then I jumped and took a chance. It seemed (so far) to work. You only live once And what if you run off to the hills and your and all the hermits love your incredible grass top Barkpooparade masks? What then?

    • You, Sir, are a hoot. Where would I be without people like you to kick my arse when it most needs it?

Oh, that's right, I'd still be sitting at Denny's having coffee with all the other geeks who need a good boot to the head...

Well, onward and upward. I'll keep your words in mind as I trek through the streets of Bellingham looking for a kind soul to sell my art. And if pleading doesn't work, I'll try lead-pipe cruelty and intimidation... <img src="images/phpbb/icons/icon_wink.gif" />

    • What's really amusing to me is that making masks freed my creativity. I was a &quot;serious artist&quot; (painter) and I was scared stiff. But when I started making masks, I really started playing and having fun, and the floodgates opened.

I don't know if it's the same for all artists, but I believe that once you find something you truly enjoy doing (passion and fun, not just longsuffering passion) that the universe rewards you with open doors you never imagined were there.

I guess this is my introductory post on this wonderful website...

I am so glad you joined. As you can see this site is very cool. There are some great folks here and the web site design work blows away my little ole attempt at a community. Now I get to enjoy all I want with none of the work!

    • Sarah,

I would not worry about your creativity drying up because we all go through times when we get stuck. We all need a fresh outlook at times. Some people call it a vacation. Enjoy the ride of creativity you are on now. If you get too successful you will just go to the next stage.

    • Stanley,
Thanks for your words of wisdom. But what if the next stage is bigger than little ol' me can handle? I just feel this overwhelming push towards self fulfillment and I don't know if I can handle that much change so quickly.
Ah, enough of my bellyachin'- you have wonderful masks, Stanley, and I'm glad you joined on.

    • Sarah,
I believe that almost all grounded, nonconceeded artists endure this turmoil of the demands for what is good... your work. Sure when you are discovered and bought and discovered and your work begins to populate the world there might even be a demand for your work but you always have the choice of what to make and when to make it.
An artist creates for thier need to communicate an expression that words can't always reach. An artist's soul reason for creating is not to fullfill the desire of others. To thine own self be true because it will be that self expression of you that gets you discovered. When you loose that then you become a slave and are no longer an artist... blah, bah, blah... OZ has spoken! Good luck-Feather
