• i'm looking for some input from individuals who have some experience making papier mache masks. i've made myself a mask, but i'm uncertain about how to go about decorating it.

i would like achieve a rich, glossy enamel finish like the masks on the casanova venentia site, using whites, silvers and golds.

any help is appreciated!
thanks!

• I think that the most important part about getting a smooth, glossy finish on a papier mask is to work on the surface of the mask first. Seal it well, I use acrylic gesso, sanding each of a couple of layers and adding 2-3 layers to make sure it is sealed well. Then you can either use acrylic or enamel.....which ever is most readily available ( a couple of thin coats works best) and then finally, a very glossy acrylic varnish or spray clear enamel. Just remember that you cannot spray lacquer onto an enamel surface......it will ruin it! It helps to do a "test" piece before starting the project.
