• Hello,
I was wondering if you could tell me about the masks that were used when Romeo and Juliet was performed. For instance at the mask when they meet for the first time. I was given a project to make a mask from that time period and really don\'t know where to begin.
If you could help me that would be wonderful.

• An interesting question. Character masks were not generaly used in Elizabethan theatre. Often masks were employed as a method of disguise but not to as a basis for persona. However Shakespeare, as all geniuses do, stole from other performance genres such as the Commedia dell'Arte. The structure and characters of Taming of The Shrew hold many similarities with the scenarios and masks of Commedia.

It is argued that Romeo & Juliet appeared first as a comic scenario (The last scene ending with Juliet waking up in time to stop Romeo ending his life.) and numerous modern "Commedia" productions have used this scenario.

However, during the masked ball the performers would have probably disguised themselves in loups or domino masks in the venetian style. Look at decorative Venetian masks modern and old and images from the venice carnival.

icon smile "I searched on the
search engine, "Google". and there are many, many
references for Romeo & Juliet.

If you use "Google", yu will notice that at the top of
the page, there are a variety of catagories that they
can do a search in.......and one of them is "images".
In the images category, there were over 7350
references and if you check in the regular catagory,
there are 470,000 references!!! It will require a bit
of searching.......but I think they can find some
useful information here.

• Hello.

There is a website on Shakespeare and the "Globe" theatre. Do a word search under those words. I don't remember the URL. It will give you a better idea of the costuming end of it. This was the Renaissance period where female roles were portrayed by boys or young men.

I hope this helps.
