• I am currently taking a theater class and I really enjoy it. I am making a mask for one of the characters of the book Animal Farm. I got the plaster gauze from the local medical supply store and made a model of my husbands face. I am looking for ideas to help me create the perfect pig.

    • if you want to be able to make more than one mask from the face cast of your husband, I would suggest that you make a solid plaster cast from the 'plaster guaze' mask. Coat inside of 'plaster guaze' mask with vaseline (or other lubricant) and then pour plaster into mold (being sure to plug holes in nose first!

Once you have the plaster cast, you can build features onto it with plastelina or other non-hardening clay/modeling materials available today, such as sculpey (polymer clay). You build the features directly onto the clay cast. Then you can build paper mache layers onto the entire model (or you can also use latex rubber, if you want a more flexible mask). Will it be wearable? Will the mask be primarily decorative?

There are decisions to be made at each step of the process. The advantage of using the plaster cast to build your mask on, is that once you have completed the mask, you can remove the modeling material and create another character, using the same cast.

If you use the plaster guaze mask by itself, then you'd have to do another casting each time you want to create another animal character.

Good luck. Juanita Wolff icon biggrin
