OThER: Question re. Working with foil RSS

    • Can anyone advise me on what the best glue/s are to use is when working with tinfoil? I am in the UK so would appreciate it if ony posters would describe adhesives by the substances themselves rather than possibly unfamiliar US brand names. Thanks!

    • hi,

      have had some interesting results working with glue gun and tin foil as a modeling medium. However if you want to stick foil flat use a spray glue, for instance spray mount, available at art shops. Also use a quality foil as it rips less easily.

    • I just went to a workshop, where the artist showed some interesting results using tinfoil and carpenters glue diluted in a bit of water, carefully applied with brush. icon wink

    • Thanks for your replies! I only have expereince using quite basic cheap household foil, not specialist craft foils. I've tried working with undiluted pva glue as well as clear &quot;UHU&quot; type glue, and in both cases the foil tended to peel off very easily, hence my post. I haven't yet worked with a glue gun , so thanks for mentioning that ! I want to be able to overlap and overlay the foil on a papier-mache surface. Perhaps if the mask is lacquered or acrylic varnish brushed or sprayed on at the end, that solves the problem, but it's frustrating when it peels as I am working on the object (which is quite curved and contoured , not flat, by the way). Thanks again for the responses.

    • Do you actually want to use foil or is the the reflective surface you want? You could try using Silver Leaf - more expensive than foil but would stick ok. The other option is to use a spray contact adhesive which you spray on both surfaces and leave to go tacky. The only problem with this is that once you have positioned, you can't move it.
